A watch only gets worn if it fits. Too big and it slides around and overwhelms your wrist; too small and it looks lost. The good news: finding your right size takes about two minutes and one measurement. This guide walks you through it, explains the numbers that actually matter, and shows you exactly where Clicöt's two case sizes — 36mm and 42mm — land.
Step 1: Measure your wrist
Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a strip of paper you then measure against a ruler) around your wrist at its narrowest point, just below the wrist bone. Keep it snug but comfortable. Note the measurement.
As a rough guide:
- Smaller wrist: under 6.5 inches (16.5 cm)
- Medium wrist: 6.5–7 inches (16.5–18 cm)
- Larger wrist: over 7 inches (18 cm)
That single number drives almost every sizing decision below.
Step 2: Match your wrist to a case size
Case diameter — the width of the watch face — is the most noticeable part of a watch's size. Here's the standard pairing:
| Your wrist | Recommended case diameter |
|---|---|
| ~6 inches | 34–36mm |
| ~6.5–7 inches | 38–40mm |
| ~7–7.5 inches | 40–42mm |
| 8 inches or more | 44mm and up |
Where Clicöt fits: our watches come in two sizes that cover most wrists comfortably.
- 36mm — our women's and smaller-wrist pieces (Hera, Koko, Pandora). Elegant, refined, and easy to dress up or down.
- 42mm — our men's and bolder pieces (Cronus, Thor, Polaris, Stella). Confident and modern, with real presence on the wrist.
Note that size is about the wrist, not the gender on the label. A woman who loves a bold look may prefer a 42mm; a man with a slimmer wrist may be happiest in a 36mm. Wear what fits and what you love.
Step 3: Consider the other dimensions
Case diameter is the headline, but two more measurements affect how a watch actually sits:
- Case thickness. A thicker watch sits higher on the wrist and reads sportier; a thinner case slips under a shirt cuff and feels dressier. For everyday versatility, a moderate thickness wins.
- Lug-to-lug distance. This is the length from the top lug to the bottom lug — the part that determines whether a watch overhangs the edges of your wrist. If a watch's lug-to-lug is wider than your wrist is flat, it'll sit awkwardly no matter how good the diameter looks. On a smaller wrist, a shorter lug-to-lug is your friend.
Step 4: Factor in style
Sizing has a style dimension too:
- For a dressy, refined look, size down 1–2mm. Smaller, thinner cases (34–40mm) read as elegant and slip easily under a cuff.
- For a sporty, modern look, size up 1–2mm. Larger cases (40–45mm) read as bold and casual.
- When in doubt, go slightly smaller. An undersized watch looks intentional and classic; an oversized one looks like it's wearing you.
Step 5: Use the printable size guide
The easiest way to be sure before you buy is to see it at actual size. Clicöt's printable sizing chart lets you print the watch at 1:1 scale and hold it to your wrist — no guesswork.

Quick answers
Is 36mm too small for a man? Not at all — on a slim wrist (under ~6.5"), 36mm can look perfectly balanced and classic. Many vintage men's watches were 34–36mm.
Is 42mm too big for a woman? No — 42mm is a popular, confident choice for women who want their watch to be a statement. It comes down to wrist size and the look you want.
What if I'm between sizes? Go with the smaller case for a dressier, more timeless feel, or the larger one for a bolder, sportier presence.
